BCHC signed onto a letter led by the Data: Elemental to Health campaign to request that Congress preserve funding appropriated to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Data Modernization Initiative and Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics through the American Rescue Plan Act.

“Clawing back” unspent funds earmarked for these initiatives would catastrophically damage our nation’s public health infrastructure and directly impede our ability to respond to future public health crises. Public health data are essential for effective daily public health actions and response and during public health emergencies.

There is much more work to be done to create a modern public health data system that is equipped to respond to emerging threats and more resources are needed, especially at the state, territorial, and local levels. The loss of funding for data modernization would represent an incredible setback for these efforts.
