Monitoring Prescriptions in Washington, D.C.

The District of Columbia’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program works to monitor prescribing of controlled substances to ensure these medications are used legitimately for health or palliative care, and to prevent any illegal diversion. The data collection program requires physicians, dentists, nurses and other persons; or institutions, such as pharmacies and hospitals, that are licensed to distribute or dispense controlled substances, to report any distribution within 24 hours.
