In 2016, the D.C. City Council approved a paid leave plan for private sector workers that gives “eight weeks paid time off for new parents, six weeks off for those caring for sick family members and two weeks of personal sick time”. The bill was passed by a veto-proof majority in the City Council and went into effect in April 2017 (employees can access paid leave beginning in 2020) . The program is funded by a 0.62% payroll tax on employers.
