Colorado: A Leader in Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Colorado has seen a dramatic decrease in teen pregnancies and has been lauded as one of the leaders in the US for teen pregnancy prevention programs. These programs, run by organizations including Colorado Youth Matter, provide education and free long-term contraceptives like IUDs.

There has been bipartisan support for the past two years in Colorado’s legislature for the Colorado Family Planning Initiative that provides IUDs to low income populations and that has cut teen pregnancies and abortions in half. This program initially started with private funding to retrain providers, expand the range of contraceptive services that are offered, and conducting a public awareness campaign. Responsibility for funding was transferred to the state budget when the initial investment ended. On a policy level, Colorado also changed reimbursement policies so women can get an IUD immediately postpartum.
